Behaviour Therapy

Preschool/School sessions
(3 - 10years)

Behaviour Therapy is conducted at the child’s preschool or school, to encourage co-regulation and improve social interactions with the child and their peers, as well as providing educators on behaviour support strategies.

What is behaviour therapy in preschool/school sessions?

Behaviour therapy in preschool/school sessions focuses on addressing behaviours in social and play environments.

Some common behaviours include:

  • Lack of interest in participating in group activities

  • Becoming highly agitated, unable to calm down

  • Preferring independent play and becoming upset when others join

  • Struggle with transitioning between different environments

  • Engaging in physical behaviours such as throwing toys, pushing or kicking peers

  • Not wanting to attend daycare/school resulting in big meltdowns

Behaviour therapy aims to identify and address the underlying causes of these behaviours, which may include difficulties in communication, emotional regulation, or social interaction. Sometimes, children display behaviours because they are trying to express themselves but do not know how, struggle to regulate their emotions when upset, or lack awareness of appropriate social behaviours. Fully understanding the primary objective of the behaviour is crucial for developing effective strategies. This will include analyzing behaviour charts while considering the child's diagnosis and personality traits, to accurately develop effective behavioural strategies.

  • The observation session, lasting for 1.5 hours, takes place at the preschool or school. The goal of the visit is to gather crucial behavioural data, speak with educators to gather more information and evaluate the child's social, cognitive, and behavioural development, and assess the suitability of the educational environment. A detailed report of the session is provided afterwards.

It is recommended that the observation session take place when the challenging behaviour is most likely to occur.

  • Once behavioural data is gathered and analyzed, preschool intensive sessions will be scheduled, consisting of a minimum of 5 x 1.5-hour sessions with 15 minutes of report writing. Each session will include a detailed progress report outlining the activities and skills addressed.

During the preschool intensive sessions, the goal is to implement behavioural strategies by directly training educators and engaging with the child in one-on-one sessions to develop necessary skills in the social, cognitive, and behavioural developmental domains.

While each child receives an individualized behavioural intervention plan, it's important to note that every child has different learning abilities. Therefore, it typically takes at least 5 sessions for behavioural strategies to demonstrate results and progress.

  • After the intensive sessions, the behavioural strategies will be reviewed to assess whether there has been an improvement in behaviour or if adjustments are necessary. In many cases, behaviours are likely to improve, according to reports by educators and parents.

Based on the child’s diagnosis, the severity of behaviours, and their developmental level, the therapist will provide recommendations to parents regarding ongoing therapy. A preschool/school behavioural intervention plan will be created based on these recommendations.

How does it work?

Behaviour therapy helps children develop the necessary skills to manage their emotions, communicate effectively, and engage positively with their peers and educators, fostering a more positive and inclusive learning environment.

I have personally provided support to numerous family daycares, preschools, and both private and public schools to train teaching professionals in supporting children in co-regulation.

Implementing evidence-based behavioural strategies, such as positive reinforcement techniques and structured routines, can significantly impact a child's behaviour and well-being.

I am excited to help your little one thrive and reach their full potential!
